Farnsworth-Hirsch Fusor,

The Farnsworth-Hirsch Fusor, or simply fusor, is an apparatus designed by Philo T. Farnsworth to create nuclear fusion.

When the Farnsworth-Hirsch Fusor was first introduced to the fusion research world in the late 1960´s , it was the first device that could clearly demonstrate the production of any fusion reactions at all. Hopes of the time were high that it could be quickly developed into a practical power source.

. However, as with other fusion experiments, development into a generator has proven difficult, and recent research suggests that there are fundamental barriers to net energy production from such a system. Nevertheless the fusor has since become a practical neutron source and is produced commercially for this role. It has been assembled in low-power forms by hobbyists.

Design

His original fusor designs were based on cylindrical arrangements of electrodes, like the original multipactors. Fuel was ionized and then fired from small accelerators through holes in the outer (physical) electrodes. Once through the hole they were accelerated towards the inner reaction area at high velocity. Electrostatic pressure from the positively charged electrodes would keep the fuel as a whole off of the walls of the chamber, and impacts from new ions would keep the hottest plasma in the center. He referred to this as internal electostatic confinement, a term that continues to be used to this day.

Various models of the fusor were constructed in the early 1960s. Unlike the original conception, these models used a spherical reaction area but were otherwise similar. Farnsworth ran a fairly "open" lab, and several of the lab techs also built their own fusor designs. Although generally successful, the fusor had a problem being scaled up; since the fuel was delivered via accelerators, the amount of fuel that could be used in the reaction was quite low.

Letters to ASTRO SA

Nov 28st 2004

Hi

Just a quick note on something I saw on your site. It was an old newsletter "Howard Johnson had to be holding the motor for it to work."

This isn't uncommon. If you search on "Coral Castle" ,there are a couple of pamphlets that the guy wrote. He stated very clearly that you had to be holding the device to produce power. The things that he did are completely unexplained. It appears that he could "see" magnetic flux.

Nobodys proved him wrong that i've heard. He had some interesting things to say regarding polar orientation with the earth while magnetizing things. You ought to read what he did. It's fascinating. I can send the links.

I also did reading relative to the "Oregon Vortex" the "motor in the magnet" was an article that was quite interesting. Somewhere relative to that was another mention that you had to be holding the device for it to function.

All I want to do is build an Adams motor and bring it to Burning Man. I read that there was a DIY manual published in OZ several years ago by Adams himself. Uhhh, you wouldn't by any chance know where I can get a copy or blueprints. I'm willing to pay what it costs.

www.burningman.com Do you know if the gravity wheel from Rutkowski can be built successfully?

  Cheers, Dan

Can you help Dan with Adams Motor information / plans?

PETER'S PAGE OCTOBER 14th 2005

Ken ... opened the meeting at 8.00pm. He asked if anyone else would like to run the meeting. Dennis L said that he would like to.

Dennis ... started the ball rolling by telling every one that everything this night had to be of a practical nature and time kept to a minimum.

Chris ...started off and said that he was doing energy research at university and that he had come across the works of Victor Schauberger, who used water in its natural state and made it do (useful) work. Chris presented an amazing water turbine that he was making along Schauberger principles. It was made out of three sheets of copper and was a self compressing turbine with a star shaped rotor. He said that it had a 1500:1 compression from centre to tip, was 1 foot long and had 1600 foot pounds of torque. The motor went on the top and the generator on the bottom. He described it as a constant speed torque multiplier and that inside of each cone was a vortexing screw. It was all beautifully dimensioned upon sacred geometry principles.

Ken ... said that he had been given a compact disk titled "An Energy Modifier" It was to be used in confidence by the group. He briefly discussed a compressed air car that had been on TV. see http://www.theaitcar.com for full information. He also discussed a wood burner, gas producing car that used 2Kg of wood per Km. More information can be obtained from

http://members.tripod.com/woodgas/woodfired.html

Ken ... displayed several versions of his Low Voltage Lighting System that he had been producing. This was designed as a 24 volt system to reduce the transmission copper size, but he said that some people wanted a 12 volt system for portable use. He explained that it had address selectable switching and then demonstrated its function using a DIP switch to change addresses to switch the desired light, which each had an individual decoder and switch. He said that he wanted his project to be 10 components or less so that others could easily replicate them.

Ken ... then described a friend's "hill sited" wind generator that was 300 meters away from his house. He explained that it needed an up voltage converter to reduce the power transmission losses (to 1/100th) by transmitting at 240 volts rather than 24V. He also wants to send data down the same power line to indicate speed and voltage, using a Programmable Integrated Circuit based controller (similar to his system above).

Uli ... demonstrated a Brown's Gas generator, a Henes Product Corporation Water Welder, Model M. It used 1.8 Volts DC to electrolyse the water into hydrogen and oxygen. It then ran this gas mix through an "alcohol in water" flame intensifier which increased the flame temperature by 2000 degrees.

Andrew ... Said that on the TV Inventor's Show they had a house being heated and cooled by the use of a solar pool. He also commented that the Israelis used black butyl in the bottom of saline pools, and had bubble wrap on the top to produce a very effective closed loop low temperature turbine generator power system.

Dennis ... produced and handed around Fisher and Paykel washing machine motor magnets. They had four poles. He then demonstrated how he had ingeniously and painstakingly re magneted a F & P motor (outer) stator with 256 times 4(groups) of magnets, by epoxying them into place after exactly setting them up with masonite wooden spacers that had been meticulously sanded to the required thickness. The magnets were off set 5 to 10 degrees to overcome cogging (jerky operation). He said that there needed to be an odd number of coils to throw it out of balance (so that it would not magnetically jamb up). He developed a technique using a plastic sauce bottle to exactly meter out the epoxy resin without getting it every where. Well done

Dennis!

The meeting closed at 9.30pm. followed by supper and an hour and a half's

good socialising.

Until next meeting,

Peter

PETER'S PAGE NOVEMBER 11th 2005

Rob ... opened the meeting at 8.00pm. He said that as there was no guest speaker it would be a member's night.

Ken ... Advised that he had rearranged the Webb page to make it more user friendly. He said that he had put the previous month” Energy Modifier" article up as a PDF file so that the diagrams would print intact. He discussed the ASTRO FORUM section and asked members to actively use it, and said that Paul, a USA reader of ASTROSA, had asked if our group would be interested in going halves in buying plans for a reduced drag wind energy device costing US$200.00. Ken also asked Dennis if he would like to use the forum for the Fisher & Paykel wind energy generator group to exchange information.

Rob ... wanted to know if anyone had heard of "Fire-Power". They are apparently a new company marketing fuel saving pills that claim a 25 - 30 % improvement in fuel economy. They are being sold in Western Australia, but not yet in South Australia.

Andrew ... in response to a query by Ken about anyone’s experiences with 10% alcohol in fuel said that his car performed poorly going up hill with the 10% alcohol added fuel. He said that theoretically we should be able to add 10 litres of water to a 40 litre alcohol / petrol mix, because the fuel / ethanol mix makes water miscible.

Ken ... said that you can easily test the ethanol percentage by adding more water to a known volume of the mix. When you shake it the ethanol comes out of the mix and it separates. You can then measure the difference by the remaining volume of petrol. He also added that planes used the exhaust gas temperature to adjust the air/fuel mix. This was to prevent engine over temperature damage.

Hans ... said that as an apprentice he used to hot up motorbikes by drilling a larger fuel jet hole. If the jet was too large, the top of pistons used to melt and end up with a hole in the middle of them.

Dennis ... displayed a pair of very large electric gauges that he salvaged from a diagnostic machine that he had bought at an auction for $ 4.00. Bruce had helped him to add resistor shunts and come up with a pair of nice sized 70 Amp ammeters. He also raised the question as to what we were really looking for in our guest speakers. He did not want people coming along as speakers just to sell something. A general discussion developed on the desirable attributes and length of talks by guest speakers.

Ken ... said that he thought that guest speakers should speak for about 30 - 45 minutes as this left a reasonable time for socialising afterwards. Most agreed!

Dennis ... discussing his neo - magnet conversions for his F & P wind generators, said that his first conversion did not work, but his second and third did work. The magnets (225 / generator) had cost $95.00 per conversion. He said that the one with the smaller blades was quiet and worked well. He also explained that he test ran the blades at 300rpm to balance them (before putting them up) as seemingly identical blades could be up to 15% out of balance when tested.

Andrew ... asked if anyone had any old computers that they were not using. He will give them to a group called ITShare, who do them up and load a freeware operating system onto them called UBUNTU. They give them out to poor people needing a computer.

Devashaon ... ran a short video on mechanical and technical inventions that were turned into art. It was quite an eye opener.

Ken ... said that Yanis had been to a two day ASTRO type meeting in Poland.

Peter ... Spoke on an article from the Guardian Science Magazine, 4th Nov 2005, called "Fuel's paradise? Power source that turns physics on its head." “ It seems too good to be true: a new source of near-limitless power that costs virtually nothing uses tiny amounts of water as its fuel and produces next to no waste. If that does not sound radical enough, how about this: the principle behind the source turns modern physics on its head." See the full article plus a simulated working fuel cell at the Black Light power Co. home page. : - http://www.blacklightpower.com/

Ken ...mentioned that a student had built a working Philo Farnsworth fusion reactor years ago.

Michael ... (in continuance with his work on a Myer type water call) spoke about "Dual polarity" as mentioned by Stanley Meyer, Walter Russell and Keeley. All structures, as the basis of their foundation, require a neutral centre. He drew three concentric circles and as an example made the inner at -ve 100V, the outer at +ve 100 V, leaving the centre at true neutral. Michael explained that this was the underlying principle behind the Myer Dual polarity coil that he was attempting to duplicate.

Dino ...

Mathew ... described the skin cancer curing abilities of a common garden weed called Petty Spurge or Radium Weed or Euphorbia peplus. The method of use is that one applies the white latex like sap, twice daily for five days and then covers it with lanolin grease for another five days.

Rob ... reminded everyone that the next meeting, 9th Dec was the inventor's night.

The meeting closed at 10.25pm. and was followed by supper and an hour of good socialising.

Until next meeting,

Peter
